DTU Management would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting no later than October 1st, 2025. You will work under the supervision of Associate Prof. Filipe Rodrigues, Prof. Kira Vrist Rønn (SDU), and Associate Prof. Line Harder Clemmensen (KU).
You will work on research focused on developing AI-enhanced Agent-based Simulation tools to support Intelligence analysis. The project is funded by the Danish National Defence Technology Centre (NFC). The project is a collaboration between DTU, the Alexandra Institute and Copenhagen University’s expertise in AI-driven modeling of complex information systems, and SDU and the Royal Danish Defence College’s established intelligence studies and practice. By introducing computational modeling to traditional intelligence analysis, the project will ensure the integration of the newest technological developments to enhance threat assessments and elevate intelligence studies with cutting-edge modeling.
You should have an MSc background in Intelligence, Security, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree and with an interest (and ideally some experience) in Agent-based Modelling, Simulation, and Computational Social Science.
This position is funded under the DTU-JRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your primary responsibilities are:
- Become familiar with advanced concepts and existing literature in relevant Agent-based Modeling, AI, and Computational Social Science.
- Become familiar with the latest literature on using advanced modelling tools for Intelligence analysis.
- Implement Agent-based Modeling tools in Python.
- Develop and implement novel tools for Intelligence analysis.
- Carry out benchmark analysis, evaluating improvements over traditional intelligence analysis tools.
- Participate in international conferences.
- Take advanced classes to improve academic skills.
- Carry out teaching, teaching support and BSc./MSc. co-supervision as part of the overall PhD contract.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in Intelligence, Security, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Additional qualifications include:
- Experience with traditional Intelligence analysis tools.
- Good programming skills in Python, or similar.
- Curiosity and interest in Agent-based Modelling, Simulation, and Computational Social Science.
- Excellent communication in English and interpersonal skills for working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Able to work independently;
Approval and Enrolment

Assessment
The selection is made in two phases: a first round of interviews at DTU, and an (optional) second round, potentially involving other collaborators in the project. The assessment of the applicants will be led by Filipe Rodrigues at DTU.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
